From pain to powerlifting: my journey Years ago, I was trapped by my own body. Severe tendonitis meant I couldn’t lift my arms without shoulder pain, carrying groceries made my elbows ache, and my knees and lower back felt “aged” beyond repair. My doctor gave the standard advice: “Go to the gym, but only lift light weights. Your joints simply can’t handle the heavy stuff anymore.” For a while, I followed that advice, going through the motions mostly on machines with high repetitions. But the barbell kept calling to me. At first, it was a struggle: I couldn’t get the bar comfortable on my back to squat, I couldn’t touch it to my chest on the bench, and the deadlift terrified me. I didn’t give up. I stayed consistent, disciplined, and focused on technique and recovery. Today, those “aged” joints have been replaced by the resilience of a competitive Master Powerlifter and a Certified Personal Trainer. I’ve traded the dull ache of inactivity for the rush of endorphins, the challenge of the heavy iron, and the satisfaction of intense, purposeful training.
